GlobalG.A.P. and the EU Retail Supply Chain

GlobalG.A.P. (Good Agricultural Practices) is the world's leading farm assurance scheme, with over 200,000 certified producers in 135 countries. GlobalG.A.P. certification is a de facto requirement for supplying major EU retailers — Tesco, Carrefour, Lidl, and Aldi all require GlobalG.A.P. certification from their fresh produce suppliers. The GlobalG.A.P. Integrated Farm Assurance (IFA) Standard v6 covers food safety, environmental sustainability, worker health and safety, and animal welfare. South African citrus and deciduous fruit producers who supply EU retailers are typically GlobalG.A.P. certified — the National DPP Registry embeds their GlobalG.A.P. Number (GGN) in the DPP as a machine-readable certification anchor.

The GGN as a Machine-Readable Identity Anchor

The GlobalG.A.P. Number (GGN) is a 13-digit unique identifier assigned to each GlobalG.A.P. certified producer. The GGN is linked to the producer's certification status, the scope of their certification (which products and activities are covered), and their audit history. The National DPP Registry integrates with the GlobalG.A.P. database to verify GGN ownership and certification status at the point of onboarding. The verified GGN is embedded in the DPP JSON-LD payload's 'certification' property, creating a machine-readable certification anchor that EU retail buyers can verify in real time via the registry's API.

GRASP and the Social Sustainability Module

GlobalG.A.P.'s Risk Assessment on Social Practice (GRASP) module assesses the social sustainability of farm operations, covering worker rights, health and safety, and living conditions. GRASP is increasingly required by EU retailers as part of their CSDDD supply chain due diligence. South African citrus producers who hold GRASP certification can embed their GRASP assessment result in the DPP, demonstrating social compliance to EU buyers. The National DPP Registry includes a GRASP result field that maps directly to the EU's CSDDD social due diligence requirements.
