South African exporters face a clear and non-negotiable deadline: 19 July 2026. From this date, the EU Central Digital Product Passport Registry activates, and every product shipped to the EU must carry a valid, machine-readable DPP. This guide provides a step-by-step compliance roadmap for South African SMEs across the three primary export sectors: textiles, mining, and agriculture.

Step 1 — Determine Your Sector and Deadline

The first step is identifying which EU Delegated Act applies to your products and when your compliance deadline falls:

  • Mining & Minerals — EU Battery Regulation 2023/1542: February 2027. CBAM definitive phase: January 2026.
  • Textiles & Apparel — ESPR Textile Delegated Act: Mid-2027.
  • Agriculture & Citrus — EUDR (deforestation): 2026. General ESPR food products: 2028.
  • Electronics — ESPR Electronics Delegated Act: 2027.

Step 2 — Register Your SME on the National DPP Registry

SME registration requires three inputs:

  1. CIPC Registration Number — Your company registration number from the Companies and Intellectual Property Commission.
  2. Director Smart ID — The South African Smart ID number of the company director, used for biometric identity anchoring.
  3. Sector Selection — Your primary export sector (Textiles, Mining, or Agriculture).

The registry performs an automated CIPC sync within 24 hours, creating your immutable entity node. You receive a CIPC-verified badge and access to the Minting Station.

Step 3 — Gather Your Compliance Documents

The specific documents required depend on your sector:

Mining & Minerals

  • GISTM (Global Industry Standard on Tailings Management) audit report
  • JSE Sustainability Disclosure (for listed companies)
  • Carbon intensity certificate (tonnes CO₂ per tonne of mineral)
  • Chain-of-custody documentation from mine to export

Textiles & Apparel

  • Fibre composition test report (ISO 1833 or equivalent)
  • Recycled content verification certificate
  • PEF (Product Environmental Footprint) carbon footprint calculation
  • GS1 GTIN (Global Trade Item Number) for each SKU

Agriculture & Citrus

  • GlobalG.A.P. certification with GGN (GlobalG.A.P. Number)
  • PPECB (Perishable Products Export Control Board) phytosanitary certificate
  • GPS geolocation proof of production land (for EUDR compliance)
  • Pesticide MRL (Maximum Residue Level) test report

Step 4 — Mint Your DPP Passport

The Minting Station at /mint guides you through the hashing process:

  1. Select your compliance document(s)
  2. Enter the declared shipment value (in ZAR)
  3. The SHA-256 hash is generated client-side in your browser
  4. Review the royalty calculation (0.50%–2% of shipment value)
  5. Complete payment via the Stripe checkout
  6. Receive your forensic hash and GS1 Digital Link QR code

Step 5 — Attach the QR Code to Your Shipment

The GS1 Digital Link QR code must be physically attached to the shipment packaging and included in the commercial invoice and packing list. EU customs authorities scan the QR code to access the DPP verification URL. The QR code links to: digitalproductpassports.co.za/v/{hash}

Ongoing Compliance: Annual Renewal

DPP passports are valid for 12 months from the minting date. Annual renewal is required to maintain compliance. The registry sends renewal reminders 60 days before expiry. Renewal requires re-hashing updated compliance documents and paying the annual royalty fee.
